History of Castle Rock

 The first residents of Castle Rock were Arapahoe and Cheyenne Native Americans, and several wildlife species. When 1862 rolled around, and the Homestead Act was announced, settlers made their way to the Castle Rock area in hopes of finding gold and becoming rich. It was not gold, however, that made Castle Rock an attractive place to settle. A stone called “Rhyolite” was what was discovered – and this was Castle Rock’s claim to fame at the time.

Ten years after the 1862 Homestead Act, there were still only a few permanent residents in Castle Rock. Most of the people who lived there were busy miners. However, a new train depot was built in Castle Rock, which made it possible to easily ship out Rhyolite as well as import much needed foods and goods.

In 1881, the Town was officially incorporated and has continued to steadily grow over the course of its more than 100-year existence. Today, there is a historic downtown area as well as quite a few newer communities in the surrounding areas. The town continues to grow and prosper while acquiring more residents each year.
