Centennial is the newest city in the State of Colorado. The city is made up of several areas of land that used to be considered Unincorporated Arapahoe County. Centennial is part of the southern part of the Denver Metropolitan area and not only is Centennial a new city, having been incorporated in 2001, but it is also one of the biggest cities in the Denver vicinity. The State of Colorado is often called, “The Centennial State” because it became part of the union 100 years after it was formed in 1776. The name “Centennial” was chosen for the City of Centennial, in part, to honor the State’s nickname.

Centennial is part of Arapahoe County and is located close to many parts of Douglas County (including Highlands Ranch), Littleton, Englewood, and Lone Tree. Residents who live in Centennial often travel to the nearby Denver Tech Center or Downtown Denver for employment. Conversely, many who live outside of the city commute to Centennial for work. Centennial is conveniently located to most of the Denver-area’s popular attractions, tourist destinations, and not a far drive from the Rocky Mountains.

Centennial Airport is a small, commuter airport that is located just outside of Centennial’s city limits. It has been in existence for more than 30 years and is used primarily by private airplanes. Although they share the same name, the airport is not part of the City of Centennial.

History of Centennial

The City of Centennial does not have a very old history due to the fact that it was just incorporated in 2001 and it is the youngest city in the state. Centennial is made up of areas that used to exist in Unincorporated Arapahoe County and the areas that became Centennial in 2001 were partially commercial, partly residential, and partly other areas such as open space and parks.

Residents and politicians pushed the idea of incorporation for Centennial because the area of land that is now Centennial was on the verge of being annexed by the City of Greenwood Village. The annexation was not wanted by a large group of people who did not want the tax dollars collected by businesses in Unincorporated Arapahoe County to be given to Greenwood Village’s government. So, a huge push was made to incorporate Centennial. When the issue was put on the ballot, the incorporation passed by a huge percentage. 

Centennial Recreation

One of the most well-known landmarks located close to Centennial is the Park Meadows Shopping area. Not only does the mall itself have almost 200 stores and restaurants, the area surrounding the mall is full of other shopping venues, restaurants, and entertainment areas. Some of the most popular entertainment venues include many movie theatres, bowling alleys and fun centers, restaurants, spas and salons, and golf courses.

Inverness Hotel and Golf Club is one of the most popular places to stay for out-of-towners who are visiting the Centennial area. The hotel often hosts conferences because it is large and upscale enough to host even the most discriminating guests. The golf club at Inverness is open to the public and offers a PGA championship course.

Another place of interest to Centennial residents as well as those living in surrounding cities is the site of the former Southglenn Mall. The mall was located at the intersection of University Boulevard and Arapahoe Road until it was demolished in 2006. The piece of land where the mall used to sit is about 65 acres large and is being redeveloped into a new retail area that will be named, “The Streets at SouthGlenn.”
