Not only is Englewood home to many thousands of residents, but there are also about 2,500 businesses that exist within Englewood’s boundaries. This means that many residents can live very close to their place of employment, which is considered a huge benefit to people who don’t enjoy long commutes during rush hour ever day of the week.

Because of the number of businesses and corporate offices in Englewood, and because of its central location, Colorado’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) decided to place two conveniently located major Light Rail stations in Englewood. The two stations are located at “City Center” and “Oxford Station.” The City Center station currently sees about 5,000 boardings every day of the work week, and the Oxford Station sees about 800 boardings every day of the work week. Because of its extreme popularity, there is a third Light Rail station slated to open at the intersection of West Bates Avenue and S. Galapego Street sometime in 2007 or 2008.

History of Englewood

Just like most of the cities in the Denver Metropolitan area, Englewood attracted its first visitors and residents during the gold rush of the 1800s. People in search of gold in the west often stopped in Colorado on their way. When a few individuals struck it rich by panning for gold in the South Platte River, others began migrating to the area that is now the City of Englewood.

Not just gold-seekers began settling in Englewood. Farmers and ranchers did well in the area, so the land was used for these purposes. Over the course of time, more people moved to the area and small stores began to open. People began to stop in Englewood as they traveled across the country to stock up on supplies. Stores and small businesses in the area also allowed residents to get the items they needed to lead more “modern” lives.

Around 1880, the infrastructure around the Denver Metro area began to be more advanced. Roads began to be more developed, and streets and neighborhoods began to form in organized fashions. Once roads became more accessible, people were able to more easily move from place to place, which increased the traffic to and from Englewood.

Just before the 1890s, Englewood’s reputation as a hometown settlement began to change. There were several saloons and places to gamble in the area, which led to increased crime. However, at the turn of the 19th century, many of Englewood’s female residents decided the area needed to be cleaned up. Hence, a new government was formed and more land was added to the Englewood’s official boundaries. Englewood was officially incorporated in 1903.

Over time, transportation methods developed from horse cars to electric streetcars to trolley cars in the 1940s. Just before 1970, a public bus system began operation which allowed even more residents and visitors a greater opportunity to shop, work, and travel through Englewood.

During the Roaring 20s, Englewood saw great development including more paved roads and an increased number of businesses. However, Englewood was hit hard by the Great Depression in the 30s. The end of World War II, was what brought new life to Englewood. In the 1940s, new schools were built in Englewood and many new businesses decided to make their headquarters in the city. Over the course of the next 50 years, many parks, open space areas and shopping malls were built – which all drew people to the area.

Today, Englewood is doing well. It has a new CityCenter development that is a combination of housing, government offices, stores, office buildings, many health care facilities, and several entertainment venues. The city focuses on education and the arts and has an outstanding level of community involvement by residents.

Culture and Recreation

The City of Englewood supports a Cultural Arts Commission that is dedicated to placing art in public places so that residents as well as visitors can enjoy artistic displays without having to go anywhere specific or pay admission for a glimpse. In addition to the Cultural Arts Commission, the city also supports a Museum of Outdoor Art.

In Englewood’s CityCenter, there is an amphitheater that hosts free concerts in the summer as well as other live performances appropriate for both adults and children. 

The places to enjoy the great outdoors are numerous in Englewood. The city maintains a recreation center, a public golf course, and several parks that include playgrounds and picnic areas. A favorite among Englewood residents and visitors from all over the Denver Metro area is Pirates Cove. Pirates Cove, which is a water park only open during the warm months, is always jammed packed with happy swimmers.

Another popular entertainment venue is called, “Hampden Hall.”  Hampden Hall is located in Englewood’s CityCenter and is a theater where many events take place such as: concerts, performing arts, and educational lectures. The facility can seat almost 200 people.
