History of Greenwood Village

Approximately half a century ago, Greenwood Village was a very rural area, with just a few hundred residents. Most of the roads were not paved and most of the land was used for farming. Over the course of 50+ years, however, the city has grown and developed as one of the most desirable places to live in the entire Denver Metropolitan area.

As with most areas in Colorado, Greenwood Village was once home to tribes of Native Americans and began to see settlers in the 1860s when many people moved to Colorado in search of gold. Several years after the gold rush, the land in what is now Greenwood Village was used primarily for harvesting fruit and potatoes.

In the 1930s and 1940s, most of the population of the Greenwood Village area were farmers and people who used the area for vacations from their permanent residences in Denver. In 1950, the permanent residents in the area decided that incorporating Greenwood Village would be a good idea, in hopes of limiting the commercial and residential development within Greenwood Village’s limits. When the vote was passed, Greenwood Village became an official town.

Today, Greenwood Village is a populous city, but many of the homes sit on large pieces of land and some considered horse property. However, the government of the city works hard to keep Greenwood Village feeling like a small, close-knit community.

Culture and Recreation

The City of Greenwood Village has lots to offer its residents in terms of cultural happenings and recreational activities and facilities. The city supports an arts and humanities center where residents can enroll in classes or attend social gatherings, as well as many community events designed to promote positive relationships between neighbors.

Each summer, the city sponsors a “Concert in the Park” series which draws residents as well as people living in nearby communities. Many can be seen traveling to the concerts on foot and on bike, and several people bring a picnic dinner to eat while listening to music. The city also sponsors biking events, golf tournaments, Fourth of July festivities, a Fall Festival, and many others.

The number of restaurants in Greenwood Village is numerous, and most restaurants are within close proximity to boutiques and shopping areas. The city is also known for its high-end shops as well as stores that sell unique items.

The city offers many award-winning neighborhood parks, almost 300 acres of designated open space, biking/walking/jogging paths, and sports fields. There are also many organized sports leagues available for kids as well as adults.
