Lone Tree did not exist as a city prior to 1995. In 1995 the area, which was originally part of Unincorporated Arapahoe County, was incorporated as “the City of Lone Tree.” The city was established, in part, because many people were discouraged about the potential for improper development along Colorado’s Highway 470. So, to ensure beneficial improvement to the area, residents voted to incorporate Lone Tree.

Lone Tree is a unique area that is home to one of the most popular malls in the entire Denver Metro area: Park Meadows. History of Lone Tree


The residents of what is now Lone Tree are primarily responsible for the City’s existence. Prior to 1995, individuals who lived in the area of Unincorporated Arapahoe County, which sits near the C-470 corridor, became very concerned that the development of the area was not what they wanted to see in their backyards. So, instead of allowing the land to be developed without any say from the residents in the vicinity, a group of individuals pushed for the incorporation of Lone Tree. Voters ultimately decided the fate of Lone Tree, and the decision to incorporate was won by the majority.

Since its incorporation and election of a City Council, the city has grown to include many new developments, including RidgeGate which is a master planned community located south of Lincoln. Other residential communities that were annexed to Lone Tree after its incorporation are Heritage Hills, Centennial Ridge, Southridge Preserve, and Carriage Club. In 2003, construction began on Sky Ridge Medical Center and several commercial and retail facilities.

It was not until 2004 that the City had official employees. During this year, the Lone Tree police department opened for business. Two years later, Park Meadows Mall was annexed into Lone Tree, which greatly enhanced the tax base for the city.

2006 was a very important year for Lone Tree. First, it was the year that the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce began its operation. Second, it was the year in which the Regional Transportation District opened a Lightrail stop at Lincoln. The easy access to Lightrail made Lone Tree an even more popular choice for residents who want to live in Lone Tree but must commute to Downtown Denver (or elsewhere) for employment and want to use an easy form of public transportation.

The future for Lone Tree is very promising and there are many additional improvements and advancements planned for the area. Not only does the City currently host a summer concert series, holiday celebrations and public displays of art, but the community formed a Recreation Advisory Committee in 2006 to help determine what types of additional events and amenities would benefit Lone Tree residents the most. In addition to a new recreation committee, the city is also planning to open a new Douglas County School District magnet school called, Lone Tree Elementary School, in the fall of 2007.


Culture and Recreation

A person living in Lone Tree can go for days, weeks or even months without the need to leave the city limits for entertainment, a taste of culture, or recreation venues.

During the summer months, the City hosts a Summer Concert Series – free and open to the public, public art exhibits and community events and activities. Outdoor recreation is one of Lone Tree’s greatest assets and one of most popular parks in the city is Sweetwater Park, which offers hiking, biking and walking trails.

Lone Tree is part of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District. This means that residents of Lone Tree can utilize the District’s recreation centers at a resident rate. The Lone Tree recreation center is one of the City’s newest facilities and offers fitness equipment and a very modern indoor swimming area that includes a big water slide, a lazy-river, a zero-entry area for kids, and a large hot tub. Lone Tree residents also have easy access to several golf courses.

The City of Lone Tree has been supporting an Arts Commission since 1999. The goal of the Commission is to promote arts and culture to residents. The Commission has made great strides over the past several years in encouraging residents to partake in cultural activities or, at least, view art that is present in public areas around the City.

The Douglas County Public Library system also plays an integral part in enhancing cultural in Lone Tree. There is a large library branch in Lone Tree, and the facility holds many books but also hosts several year-round programs for adults and children of all ages
