History of Commerce City
The present site of the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds was once known as Henderson Island, a settlement founded by John D. Henderson. He built a trading post, ranch and hotel where he sold food and supplies to gold prospectors on their way to the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. The area that grew around the unincorporated settlement in the years that followed was called Commerce Town.
Commerce Town was a thriving agricultural community with wheat farms, pig farms and dairies throughout the 1920’s, In the 1930’s, however, the Continental Oil Company established an oil refinery in Commerce Town and after that several grain elevators were built. In 1942, the army built the Rocky Mountain Arsenal just east of the town and the of the town changed from agricultural to industrial and commercial.
In 1951 the city of Denver was making plans to annex Commerce Town, so 300 citizens of Commerce Town voted to incorporate. In 1962 Commerce Town annexed the nearby Derby area and its population became large enough to qualify as a city and Commerce City became its official name. Today’s Commerce City is a flourishing community of attractive housing, numerous parks, schools and up-to-date shops and civic and business concerns.
