The Barnum neighborhood has been part of Denver since 1896. Its boundaries are from West 6th Avenue to Alameda Avenue and from Federal Boulevard to Sheridan Boulevard.
The community was named after P.T. Barnum who was one of the founders of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Barnum purchased several hundred of acres of land in the late 1880s and when the area was annexed into the City of Denver in 1896, it was named "Barnum" in his honor.
There are many historical buildings in the Barnum neighborhood that still stand today. Most of the homes in this community are affordable for first-time homebuyers, and range in size from about 1,000 finished square feet to approximately 2,500 finished square feet. Some have one bedroom and one bathroom, but others have up to five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Some have been renovated since they were built in the early 1900s to mid-1900s.
Barnum sits close to Interstate 25 and 6th Avenue, and the neighborhood is located just a short distance from Downtown Denver. Also in close proximity are Weir Gulch Open Space Park, Westwood Park, Barnum North Park, Barnum East Park, and Barnum South Park.
