Evergreen Neighborhoods

History of Evergreen

Thomas Bergen, an early settler, arrived in the thickly forested, mountainous area now known as Evergreen in 1859.  He homesteaded in a region four miles north of downtown which is now known as Bergen Park.  Before other ranchers and farmers began settling in the locale, Bergen had carved a stage stop and summer hunting range out of the wilderness for the Ute and Arapaho Indians.

The sawmills that provided lumber for Denver’s houses and commercial establishments were Evergreen‘s earliest industry. The farmers and ranchers who were early settlers in the Bear Creek Canyon area, sold their cattle and produce in Colorado‘s capital city. D.P. Wilmot, the owner of a sizable area of land south of town, named his spread “Evergreen” and this is how the city got its name. By the 1880’s, the newly named town had 200 residents, six sawmills, a blacksmith, barber, hotels and several general stores. By 1911, travel between Denver and Evergreen improved and the town grew even larger.

Evergreen became a resort town when Denver residents began using the mountain community as a summer retreat. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, the town’s population increased dramatically during the summer months as a handful of resort hotels catered to these seasonal tourists.  The town’s identity changed again after the 1940’s and 1950’s when more people began driving cars and commuters began living in Evergreen and working in Denver.  Evergreen is still a commuter community and has been since the 1970’s.

Culture and Recreation

Denver’s many entertainment venues are nearby and the beautiful Red Rocks amphitheater is just nine miles south, but Evergreen itself has many arts-focused events and activities to offer

Three Evergreen recreation centers offer facilities for an array of activities including swimming, volleyball, basketball, racquetball, handball, and an indoor climbing wall.  Nine mountain parks and five open space parks with hiking and biking trails, and two golf courses and nearby ski resorts are also available to energetic Evergreen residents.

A variety of restaurants including American, western, seafood, steakhouses, Italian and other ethnic cuisine serve the Evergreen area.  One of them, Creekside Cellars, is a combination winery/Italian restaurant.
