HISTORY
The first inhabitants of Golden were actually the Arapahoe and Plains Indians. The first settler in the area that is now Golden was David Wall, who obtained land in 1858 and laid out a two-acre garden with irrigation from the creek. By 1859 he was selling his produce to the gold seekers passing through the valley, reaping huge profits from his endeavors. Just a short while later, a group of gold-hungry men from Boston headed by George West arrived at the mouth of Clear Creek and decided to stay put. They built the first frame housing for their Boston Company, and then laid out the town of Golden City, designated as such in 1859. By the end of 1859 there were over 700 Golden City residents.
When the Colorado Territory was formed in 1861, Golden City became the territorial capital and remained so until 1867. In 1872, the name of Golden City was officially changed to just Golden, and the following year the Coors Company was founded.
