History of Greenwood Village
Approximately half a century ago, Greenwood Village was a very rural area, with just a few hundred residents. Most of the roads were not paved and most of the land was used for farming. Over the course of 50+ years, however, the city has grown and developed as one of the most desirable places to live in the entire Denver Metropolitan area.
As with most areas in Colorado, Greenwood Village was once home to tribes of Native Americans and began to see settlers in the 1860s when many people moved to Colorado in search of gold. Several years after the gold rush, the land in what is now Greenwood Village was used primarily for harvesting fruit and potatoes.
In the 1930s and 1940s, most of the population of the Greenwood Village area were farmers and people who used the area for vacations from their permanent residences in Denver. In 1950, the permanent residents in the area decided that incorporating Greenwood Village would be a good idea, in hopes of limiting the commercial and residential development within Greenwood Village’s limits. When the vote was passed, Greenwood Village became an official town.
Today, Greenwood Village is a populous city, but many of the homes sit on large pieces of land and some considered horse property. However, the government of the city works hard to keep Greenwood Village feeling like a small, close-knit community.
