History of Highlands Ranch
Similar to most of the land in Colorado, the area that is now Highlands Ranch was once home to several Native American Indian tribes. In 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase, Highlands Ranch became an area of land officially owned by the United States.
After the land became part of the United States, it was bought and sold by many different owners. Between the late 1800s and the late 1900s, some of the individuals and companies who held the land title were John Springer, Lawrence C. Phipps, Jr., Highland Ventures, and Mission Viejo Company. Finally, in 1981, individuals began building homes in the area, and in 1997, Shea Homes purchased Highlands Ranch and began its official development.
