HISTORY
The first inhabitants of Lafayette were actually the Ute, Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians who lived in nomadic tribes in the area. In 1871, Lafayette and Mary Miller moved into the area, acquiring a farm through the Homestead Act. The couple had itchy feet, though, and moved away only three years later. They lived in Boulder, Colorado for four years while Mr. Miller ran a butcher shop. Mary served on the school board while her husband was a member of the volunteer fire department. When Lafayette Miller died suddenly in 1878, though, Mary gathered up her six small children and moved back to their Lafayette farm to manage it alone. Over the ensuing years, the farm prospered under her hand.
Over time, Mary Miller became interested in mining coal on her property, and it was indeed discovered in 1884. The first shaft was sunk by John Simpson in 1887. Only a year later, Mary platted 150 acres of land for the town of Lafayette, named for her late husband. The town boomed, increasing to a second mining operation and laying down houses within the year. In 1900 Mary Miller founded the Lafayette Bank and was elected the bank president, making her the only female bank president in the world.
As the mines in the town began to shut down with the rise in natural gas use, the town returned to its agricultural roots. As times continued to change and the town grew, it began to turn to commercial enterprises and manufacturing concerns. Today it is a thriving Colorado town.
