History of Lakewood
Lakewood was founded in 1889 by a retired president of the Colorado Central Railroad, W.A.H. Loveland and Charles Welch. The two founders platted thirteen blocks of Colfax Avenue on Denver’s west side as the town‘s original locale and named the area Lakewood after Lakewood, New Jersey. Both men established country residences in the new town. An electric tramway, built in 1893, connecting the town to Denver and Golden brought other city residents to Lakewood and the area soon became a country retreat for wealthy families from Denver.
These exiles built luxurious mansions in Lakewood and one of the most famous was the 750 acre, palatial Italian Villa style estate named Belmar, built in 1930 by Denver Post heiress May Bonfils Stanton. The vast residence was destroyed in 1970 and the grounds are now the site of the 127 acre Belmar Park where visitors can view Lakewood buildings of historical significance such as a schoolhouse, farmhouse, tavern, diner and barber shop.
In 1941, the $35 million Remington Arms Company ammunition factory was established by the federal government in Lakewood. The war time contract was the largest awarded in Colorado at that time. The facility, between Kipling and Union Streets, had concrete watchtowers and miles of chain link fencing guarding it. When the war ended in 1945, the plant became the Denver Federal Center and still functions as a government complex providing jobs to 10,000 employees.
The City of Lakewood was not incorporated until 1969, very late in its history. At that time the population was over 90,000 and had been in existence for about 80 years.
Culture and Recreation
West Denver is just a few footsteps away from Lakewood but the area has countless restaurants, stores, boutiques and shopping and dining areas all on its own. Lakewood’s City Commons is the downtown section with shops, restaurants and residences blending in with a library and Belmar Park with its heritage center, amphitheater and festival grounds. A nearby cultural center offers a 310 seat theater, artisan shop and gallery.
Residents and visitors who prefer natural settings have a stunning array of choices. Lakewood has 85 municipal and two regional parks covering over 6,000 acres. The William F. Hayden Green Mountain Regional Park is the largest park in Lakewood with 20 miles of trails and the 27 hole Fox Hollow Golf Course within its borders. Homestead Golf Course at Fox Hollow, built to resemble a working cattle ranch with windmill, pump house and log fences, is another Lakewood attraction.
The town has four recreational centers: Carmody, Green Mountain, Lakewood Link and Whitlock. Each center offers a combination of activities including swimming pools, outdoor tennis courts, cardio and weight rooms, racquetball, volleyball climbing walls and gymnasium.
Also to the west of Lakewood are the beautiful Rocky Mountains which provide not only spectacular views but ample skiing opportunities.
