LOUISVILLE HOMES BY SCHOOL TYPE

HISTORY
Like many towns and cities in this area of Colorado, Louisville was built by the miners who worked the land in the late 19th and early 20th centuries When the first mine was opened in 1877, Louis Nawatny, a local landowner, platted his land and named it after himself. The town was formally incorporated in 1882. Coal mining became the primary industry of the area, and Louisville differed from most mining towns since it was not controlled by one mining company. Miners were able to live in town and walk to one of the several nearby mines to work.
While the mines were open, immigration into Louisville was high with skilled workers arriving from Europe to take some of the plentiful jobs. The last mines near Louisville closed in 1952, however, taking away the primary industry of the town. This could have killed Louisville as it killed many other cities; however, the town turned to other activities and the city survives to this day.
