HISTORY

In 1858, the discovery of gold along Little Dry Creek attracted nation-wide attention to the area that would later be known as Westminster. The guarantee of wealth and the Land Act of 1862 inspired many settlers to travel west and make Colorado their home, rather than California. Before the area was settled, there was an abundance of wildlife such as antelope and buffalo that made this area their home. It's also proven that the Arapahoe Indians made their home near the Crown Point region.

The region has undergone many name changes. In 1870, the area was known as DeSpain Junction, after the first pioneer, Pleasant DeSpain, who constructed his home in the area. In 1885, it was renamed to Harris Park, after the real estate developer C.J. Harris who came and started buying up land. In 1891, construction began on the the Westminster Castle, which would later be known as the Princeton of the West. The town incorporated in 1911, and the area was renamed one last time to Westminster, as an homage to Westminster University.

NEIGHBORHOODS

  • Legacy Ridge - Legacy Ridge is one of Westminster's finest golf course communities. Residents enjoy golf course living at an affordable price. Search for Legacy ridge real estate and homes for sale.
  • Hyland Greens - Another one of Westminster's fine golf course communities, Hyland Greens was established in the late 1980s early 1990s and contains over 15,000 homes. With easy access to Sheridan, 104th and Highway 36, Hyland Greens makes a great home for the heavy traveler.
  • Home Farm - Home Farm is a wonderful community that was built in the 1990s. The homes in this neighborhood range in finished square feet from about 3,400 to 3,800 and contain three to five bedrooms, three to four bathrooms, and two to three attached garage spaces.
  • Huntington Trails - Huntington Trails is a brand new community currently being built in Westminster. Upon completion, the entire neighborhood will sit on 145 acres, and consist of approximately 65 homes.
  • Ranch Reserve - Established in the late 1990s, the Ranch Reserve is home to some of Westminster most amazing custom homes. Residents of the Ranch Reserve enjoy a private golf course with majestic mountain views.
  • The Ranch - Some of the most popular features of The Ranch include the neighborhood's proximity to Downtown Denver and Boulder, easy access to Interstate 25, and great views of the mountains.
  • Bradburn Village - Bradburn is one of Westminster's newest communities. Located on 120th between Federal and Sheridan Boulevards, Bradburn homeowners will enjoy 9 different parks and two separate recreation centers.
  • Countryside - The Countryside neighborhood sits near the Ketner Reservoir, which is a 22-acre area that provides residents with many trails for walking and biking as well as a fishing pier. The neighborhood is also close to a recreation center.
  • Shaw Heights - Shaw Heightgs is one of Westminster's older neighborhoods, with most of the homes built in the 1950s and 1960s, but a few were built in the early 1970s. Because it's a mature area, the trees are much larger than in many of the newest communities.
  • Sheridan Green - This neighborhood is conveniently located close to Highway 36, the Westminster City Park, smaller neighborhood parks, and public schools.

DEDICATION TO OPEN SPACES

Conserving open spaces all over the city has been a matter of great importance in Westminster for over twenty years. Ever since voters first accepted a sales tax precisely set aside to obtain and sustain open space in 1985, Westminster has conserved over 2,500 acres in all areas within its borders. That amounts to 4 square miles of natural open space, which is roughly 12% of the city's land area. Should public and private parks and golf courses be counted in the total, then almost one third of the city is conserved as "green space," which differentiates Westminster from other neighborhoods in the Denver Metro Area. One of the remarkable features offered to the residents of Westminster is the city's trail system. The Big Dry Creek Trail is one of the gems of the open space system, protruding just about ten miles from the eastern border of the city to Standley Lake, featuring trails for running, bicycling and wildlife watching. It's every bit of a wonderful experience for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
